Cairns – Wind conditions
Here in Cairns our South-East trade winds kick off in May and blow right through until October most seasons. However the wind can still blow right up until late December some seasons! May to October is a great time to learn to kitesurf. Cairns is sunny, dry and warm with fresh breezes that start up at about 11am and run through to the evening. As a general rule of thumb, so long as its sunny and we have a south -east or southerly airflow – you can count on a good breeze!
The very best months are in the middle of the season. June,July, August and September. Last September was superb with consistent strong breezes. Avoid learning to kite between November and April if you can as the trade winds start to dissipate and the rain sets in.
Like most places in the world, we can have spells of light wind or no wind during the season. If we do happen to get rain or if we get extensive cloud cover, the wind can be a little fluky. But historically speaking this is the dry windy season for North Queensland. So all going well we will have great trade winds!
